Why homeowners love tile flooring

Tile flooring works in every room in the house. It’s waterproof, so it's a natural choice for the kitchen, bath, or laundry room, but it's so stylish it can add class and glamour to a living room, home library, or hallway. Ceramics have hard surfaces that don't attract dirt, pollen, or allergens, but when they do land on the surface they’re visible, making them easy to wipe away.

What is ceramic tile?

Ceramic means any material made of clay, even if that composition also includes sand or glass, such as porcelain. It includes the 4X4 decorative squares with which we’re familiar, as well as mosaics, the tiny, highly decorated tiles. Also included are terracotta and subway tiles.

All are durable and can be used on floors, as well as walls, counters, and tub surrounds. Be sure to tell us, your tile retailer, exactly how you plan to use them because every tile type has various grades and levels determining durability, porosity, and use. If installing in a very wet room, such as the bathroom, ask the installer about using a waterproof underlayment so water doesn’t seep behind the tile through the grout lines.

Porcelain tile is a type of ceramic

Porcelain is made of a fine, non-porous clay called Kaolin and is fired at higher temperatures. This makes it harder than granite, heavier, and appropriate for floors in busy rooms or anywhere you need an aesthetic, high functioning surface. It is waterproof, whether or not it's glazed, and can stand up to weather so it’s fine for deck and patio floors or poolside.

A large format tile, porcelain comes in a large color palette, an almost unlimited number of patterns and can be made to look like anything, including stone, fabric, and leather. Porcelain is a "through body" tile, meaning that the color is baked right into the tile, making it less noticeable if a chip does occur. Non-through body chips usually display as white or beige.
